Dr. Michael T. Kellam
Dr.
Kellam has been with VisionArts since January 1988. He
graduated with honours from the University of Waterloo
school of optometry in 1986 and worked in Creston and
Osoyoos prior to moving to Nanaimo. He completed his internship
in pediatrics and vision therapy at the State University
of New York, and the therapeutics program through Pacific
University in Forest Grove, Oregon. He was granted the
honour of being named a Fellow of the American Academy
of Optometry in 1994. Dr. Kellam has been active in the
B.C. Optometric Association, working as a councilor,
ethics
chair, chair of the vision therapy committee, AGM chair,
PR chair, past treasurer, and chair of the continuing
education committee which successfully put together the first
100
hour TPA course for Canadian optometrists.
With a keen
interest in using information technologies to improve patient
care, Dr. Kellam has been consulting with
a software development team to produce a new office management
program called VisualEyes. VisionArts has been an active
beta sight for development of this new program since 1996.
This benefits our patients by assuring that their records
and transactions are stored in a safe and secure manner.
When
asked which areas of practice appeal to him the most, Dr.
Kellam shrugs and replies, "All areas are interesting!
But I particularly enjoy working with children, especially
those with reading and learning problems. Many children with
problems in school have an undiagnosed vision problem. The
right glasses or eye exercises can often make a big difference."
Dr.
Kellam has been married since 1990 to Jacqueline, a teacher.
They have two sons, Jonah and Elijah. In his spare
time, Dr. Kellam says he enjoys mountain biking, skiing
and having fun with his family.
