A Brief History of Vision Arts Eyecare Centres on Vancouver Island

Vision Arts Eyecare Centres

Many years have passed since our practice was established in 1919. Although good patient care never goes out of style, technology and education have changed over the years. Our new name "VisionArts Eyecare Centre" reflects the broad range of eye health and vision conditions that we now diagnose and treat. This article is intended to give you an idea of how our practice has evolved over the years and a summary of the doctors who are available for you.

The founding member of our practice was Dr. Stanley Morrison who attended the School of Optometry in New York. After graduation, he returned to Nanaimo and opened an office on Church Street across from the Dorchester Hotel. Dr. Tom Allester graduated from the Toronto College of Optometry and joined the practice of Dr. Morrison in 1938. After returning from service in the Second World War, Dr. Allester opened a new office in the Addison Building on Albert Street in Nanaimo. It was less than one-fifth the size of our current office, and only 15 to 20 frame styles were available! Dr. Allester retired in 1978 and continues to live in Nanaimo with his wife Margaret.

Since that time, our offices have grown to serve three locations on Vancouver Island - Nanaimo, Qualicum Beach and Ladysmith.

Dr. David Myrfield graduated from the University of Waterloo and joined Dr. Allester in 1974. They expanded into a larger office in Beaufort Centre, where the practice remained until moving to our present location in 1989.

Dr. Michael Kellam also graduated from the University of Waterloo, moving to this area in 1988. His wife is an elementary school teacher and together they have two sons, Jonah and Elijah.

Dr. Valerie Gunn has worked in New Zealand, Texas, and Vancouver. She has lived on the Central Island since 1990.

Dr. John Lam grew up in Nanaimo and received his training at the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Ruby Tse was raised in Vancouver, trained at the State University of New York, and enjoys all aspects of family eyecare.
